I am honored to submit my candidacy for President of the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC). I currently serve as Lead Psychologist for Integrated Primary and Specialty Psychological Services at Cooper University Health Care in Camden, New Jersey, and as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), where I direct Psychosocial Education and oversee our health psychology postdoctoral fellowship. These roles have enabled me to bridge clinical, educational, and research domains, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing the role of health psychology in the care of traditionally underserved populations. My leadership experience within APAHC has been extensive. I have served in multiple appointed board roles, including Co-Chair of the Early Career Psychologist and Conference Planning Committees, as well as Web Editor and Technical Liaison. Additionally, I have held leadership positions within the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Society for Health Psychology (APA Division 38), and have contributed to regional initiatives through my work as president of PENDELDOT (a NJ, NY, PA, DE pre-doctoral training consortium) and local leadership at Cooper and CMSRU. Since joining APAHC in 2017, the organization has served as my professional home, providing a collegial and enriching environment. As President, I would work to preserve and strengthen this sense of community while promoting growth through increased membership and broader representation across all sub-disciplines of health psychology. It is imperative that all members feel welcomed, valued, and empowered to help shape the future of our field. My diverse experience across clinical, academic, and leadership settings has prepared me to serve as an advocate for health psychologists and a steward for the continued growth of APAHC. I would feel deeply privileged to contribute to the organization's ongoing success. Thank you for your consideration.

Representative to APA Division 12
Sheila Dowd | Curriculum Vitae
I have been a member of APAHC for many years, serving on the Research Committee since 2019. I would like to nominate myself for the role of Representative of Division 12. I find APAHC’s work to be the most relevant to my experiences and address the complexities of my work. I would like to join the board to contribute to an organization that has created a valued community of psychologists in health centers. I have been a health psychologist in an academic medical center for the entirety of my career. The three foundational pillars embraced by AHCs: Clinical Care, Education and Research have been the focus of my work. I began as a clinical researcher and contributed to the development of novel interventions for depression and anxiety. As an educator, I focused on teaching Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to psychiatry residents, becoming an Associate Training Director for many years. Other administrative roles have included directing an ambulatory clinic, running a Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation outpatient clinic and becoming the chief of psychology. Most recently I have moved into a leadership role at Rush, and I am even more aware of the challenges facing medicine and particularly those for allied health services. I have learned the importance of communication and collaboration. It would be an honor to represent APAHC at the Division 12 meetings and foster communication with the Society of Clinical Psychology.
Leila Islam | Curriculum Vitae
I echo others as I identify APAHC as my professional academic “home” – one I was delighted to be welcomed into while on internship. I went on to serve as chair of the Early Career Committee and was fortunate enough to co-chair the ECBCs in 2017 and 2019, and the first ever virtual ECBC in 2021, during which applications to and size of the boot camps increased significantly. I served as Member-at-Large from 2021 to 2023 and currently serve as one of the chairs of the APAHC Mid-Career Bootcamp. I feel even more dedicated than ever to APAHC’s leadership, service, and advocacy - essential work given the current climate. Throughout my years of the Board, I also was a proud member of APA’s Society of Clinical Psychology – Division 12 and I see evolving opportunities for our shared membership and psychology in AHCs overall. I would be honored to serve as the APAHC representative to Division 12 and feel poised to join the board in this liaison role. Currently, I am a clinical health psychologist, associate professor and program director of the clinical health psychology postdoctoral fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) SOM. I received my doctoral degree from VCU and completed internship and fellowship at VA Connecticut Healthcare System and Yale University. After several years as director of behavioral science for a family medicine residency, I “boomeranged” back to VCU where I enjoy working in clinical care, research, teaching, and fellowship administration, as well as hospital-wide efforts focused on interprofessional education. I have served in other national roles, including receiving a presidential citation for SfHP (Division 38) taskforce work, and hope to have the opportunity to use such experience, my previous eight years on the Board, and my strong communication skills to continue to promote the mission of APAHC.

Brittany Houston | Curriculum Vitae
I am honored to apply for the Member-At-Large position with the Association of Psychologists in Academic Health Centers (APAHC). Since my fourth year in doctoral training, I have worked with integrated teams in Family Medicine Residencies, contributing to clinical care, research, and the education of learners across disciplines. My experience in academic settings—through my doctoral program, internship, post-doctoral fellowship, and professional career—enables me to connect with APAHC members at all levels of training. I benefited from the early career boot camp and aim to continue linking members to valuable resources in this role. Mary Jankowski | Curriculum Vitae
I am Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Lead Psychologist and Director of Dartmouth Trauma Interventions Research Center in the Department of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Health (DH). I first learned of APAHC in 2016 when everyone in the Department of Psychiatry was fired from Geisel School of Medicine and was hired by DH the next. I had not thought much about my professional identity until I learned that we were the first psychologists the institution had hired. Since then, I have passionately educated and advocated for psychologists within DH. My interest in becoming a Member-At-Large primarily stems from my role as Discipline Lead throughout DH, overseeing ~ 35 psychologists working in diverse settings including medical departments, state hospital and private practice. I have spent my career as a clinician educator and researcher, with a focus on improving quality and access to care for youth with behavioral health needs, and at risk and trauma- affected children, youth and families. My work has served to enhance care for this population across multiple sectors from primary care to community-based settings. I have led and evaluated large federally funded projects that translate research into action and contribute to the understanding of individual practice, as well as larger system change, including creating more trauma informed cultures within health care. My work blends intervention research, program development and evaluation, implementation science, as well as training and consultation across diverse organizations and systems. I always have maintained a small clinical practice and have taught didactics and provided supervision and mentorship to medical students, psychiatry residents and psychology trainees for 20+ years. I believe that my expertise based on these diverse roles and many years of experience would bring value to the APAHC Board and the experience of serving would enhance my effectiveness as a leader within my institution.
DEIB Representative
Jonathan Blassingame | Curriculum Vitae
I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in serving as the inaugural Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Representative on the APAHC Board of Directors. As a psychologist in academic medicine with a deep commitment to inclusive and equitable practices, I am honored by the opportunity to help shape this new role and support APAHC in leading with values of justice and belonging. Throughout my career, I have prioritized advancing the needs of historically marginalized communities in both clinical and institutional settings. I developed and implemented an evidence-based intensive outpatient program tailored to individuals with complex presentations, including trauma, suicidality, and personality disorders—populations often affected by structural inequities. In academic medicine, I’ve advocated for policies that address systemic barriers to care and professional development for minoritized faculty, trainees, and patients. My leadership experience includes serving on committees focused on equity-driven policy reform, cultural humility in supervision and training, and interdisciplinary consultation to address bias in healthcare delivery. I’ve also crafted public statements and developed trainings on anti-racism, inclusive language, and systemic accountability. These experiences have equipped me to foster collaborative, actionable change and help APAHC deepen its commitment to DEIB. I am especially energized by the opportunity to guide strategic initiatives in partnership with the Committee on Justice, Equity, Diversity, Disparities, and Inclusion. I believe I can offer thoughtful leadership to both the committee and the Board of Directors in developing and sustaining efforts that promote equity-informed leadership, reduce barriers to belonging, and amplify the voices of those historically excluded from leadership and decision-making. Thank you for considering my application. I would be honored to serve APAHC in this vital role and help advance a culture where DEIB is not only valued but actively operationalized across academic health centers.

Dr. Johnson’s expertise, commitment, and leadership have been instrumental in the success of our committee. Under our joint leadership, we developed response letters after national justice incidents and facilitated DEI resources for APHAC colleagues. He also co-organized a town hall supporting colleagues in Florida and Texas amid anti-DEI actions. His contributions have been crucial in aligning these initiatives with APHAC’s mission. Dr. Johnson is a two-tiered licensed psychologist and board-certified in clinical and group psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). Gabriel Núñez | Curriculum Vitae
Given our current sociopolitical culture, it is important for me to continue aligning myself with organizations that support same mission and commitment to providing equal opportunities to all despite their backgrounds. Although I have had experience working with diverse populations in various settings, the thread that strings my work together has been my commitment to underserved populations. I ask that in my review of my work, you consider my self-nomination for DEIB Representative. In graduate school, as the Diversity Scholarship recipient, I trained in bilingual services and obtained the “Psychological Service for Spanish-speaking Populations” certificate. On internship, I was in the CHISTE program for bilingual supervision and training working with monolingual Spanish-speakers. My internship with the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles/USC had a special focus on helping children with developmental disabilities and their families. I also helped with research on novel interventions and provided therapy to trans youth in Adolescent Medicine. On fellowship, I formulated a needs assessment and developed a bilingual program for Latinx children struggling with weight-management and obesity. In this same fellowship, I provided supervision in Spanish for LPC-I candidates and psychology interns. During the pandemic, I worked as a Consulting Psychologist on program evaluation and development for the South Carolina Department of Corrections, with efforts to expand mental health services in their state prisons. Currently, I work as a pediatric psychologist/Assistant Professor with Baylor College of Medicine. My plan is to develop a Spanish-speaking clinic and training program for psychology trainees. Overall, I ask that you consider me for DEIB representative as I look forward to working with like-minded individuals and creating equal opportunities for diverse people and ideas in our discipline. If elected, I am ready to innovate and work to make this a successful first placement in this elected position.
